Labradoodle Grooming Schedules

- Quick brush-through — Use a slicker brush to remove loose hair and prevent mats, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar area.
- Eye wipe — Gently clean around the eyes with a damp cloth to remove tear stains and debris.
- Quick inspection — Check ears, paws, and skin for anything unusual (redness, bumps, ticks).
Weekly Grooming (20–30 minutes)
- Thorough brushing — Use a combination of slicker brush and steel comb. Work section by section from the skin outward. Pay extra attention to the belly, armpits, and behind ears.
- Ear cleaning — Use a vet-approved ear cleaning solution. Labradoodles are prone to ear infections due to their floppy ears and hair growth in the ear canal.
- Teeth brushing — Use dog-specific toothpaste and a finger brush or dog toothbrush. This prevents dental disease and keeps breath fresh.
Every 4–6 Weeks
- Bath time — Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo. Overbathing can strip natural oils. Always brush thoroughly before bathing to prevent mats from tightening.
- Nail trimming — Trim nails every 3–4 weeks or as needed. If you hear clicking on hard floors, it's time for a trim.
- Sanitary trim — Keep the areas around the eyes, paws, and rear end tidy between full grooming appointments.
Every 6–8 Weeks — Professional Grooming
- Full haircut — Schedule professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. Discuss coat length preferences and any trouble spots with your groomer.
- De-matting — A professional can handle stubborn mats safely without causing discomfort.
- Anal gland expression — Some dogs need this done regularly; your groomer can check and address this.

Start grooming your puppy early! Even before they need a full groom, get them used to being brushed, having their ears touched, paws handled, and nails trimmed. This creates a positive association and makes grooming easier for life.
Crate Training Tips
A properly crate-trained dog sees their crate as a safe haven. Here's how to make it a positive experience.
Step 1: Choose the Right Crate
- Size matters — The crate should be large enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably, but not so large they can use one end as a bathroom.
- Wire vs. plastic — Wire crates offer better ventilation and visibility. Plastic crates feel more den-like and are great for travel.
- Consider a divider — For puppies, use a crate with a divider so you can adjust the space as they grow.
Step 2: Introduce the Crate Slowly
- Open door exploration — Place the crate in a common area with the door open. Toss treats inside and let your puppy explore at their own pace. Never force them in.
- Meals in the crate — Feed meals inside the crate to create a positive association. Gradually move the bowl further back.
- Comfort items — Add a soft blanket and a safe chew toy. A piece of clothing with your scent can also be comforting.
Step 3: Close the Door Gradually
- Short intervals — Start by closing the door for just a few seconds while you're nearby. Gradually increase the duration.
- Stay calm — Don't make a big fuss when opening or closing the crate. Keep it matter-of-fact.
- Ignore whining — If your puppy whines, wait for a pause before opening the door. Opening during whining teaches them that noise = freedom.
Step 4: Build Duration & Alone Time
- Leave the room — Once comfortable with a closed door, start leaving the room briefly. Return calmly.
- Nighttime routine — Place the crate in your bedroom initially. Puppies sleep better when they can sense you nearby.
- Never use as punishment — The crate should always be a safe, positive space. Never use it to punish your dog.

Nutrition Recommendations

Puppy Feeding Schedule (8 weeks – 12 months)
- 8–12 weeks — Feed 3 times daily. Puppies have small stomachs and need frequent meals for steady energy and growth.
- 3–6 months — Transition to 3 meals per day. Monitor weight and adjust portions according to the food's feeding guide.
- 6–12 months — Reduce to 2 meals per day. Continue with puppy-formulated food until your vet advises transitioning to adult food.
- 12+ months — Switch to adult food. Feed 2 meals per day for the rest of their life.
What to Look for in Dog Food
- Named meat protein first — Look for "chicken," "beef," or "salmon" as the first ingredient, not "meat meal" or "animal by-products."
- Whole grains or grain-free — Both can be appropriate. Consult your vet, especially regarding the FDA's investigation into grain-free diets and DCM.
- No artificial preservatives — Avoid BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin. Look for natural preservatives like mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E).
- Balanced omega fatty acids — Essential for coat health. Look for fish oil, flaxseed, or other omega-3 sources.
